Neal, all of this lands somewhere between disturbing and downright terrifying. But I appreciate your willingness to look at this issue from a bold, no-nonsense perspective, and I admire your willingness to be so blunt with your client. Hang in there!
Very kind of you to say so Larry and I shall continue to report back on any developments as we all navigate this new era. Thanks for commenting and all the best, N
Excellent question Bob (or do you prefer Unacceptable?), and one I have been exploring lately through books such as Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber, Vulture Capitalism by Grace Blakely and, inevitably, The Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels. Were we put here to work? Why must we justify our existence? I love these questions but, as it happens, I am here and I do need to justify my existence if only to keep a roof over my head and food on my daughter's table. So while I await the new and just economic order I must consider how to make my living (or at least my money) in an economy that is increasingly hostile to humans. Thanks for commenting and all the best, N
It's hard yards that's for sure and I am no luddite; technology is enabling me to write and build an audience (albeit for no money up front), but AI seems to be of a different order. I don't know if it's helpful to your friend but I did write this guide for creatives on how to survive the AI apocalypse based on what's working for me currently: https://nealmoore.substack.com/p/how-to-prepare-for-the-ai-apocalypse There may be some comfort in there. "Just over a week ago Anthropic launched it's Economic Futures Programme, a new initiative to support research on AI's impacts on the labour market and global economy."
Meta did this too by supporting publishers and news platforms for a number of years, in light of all the "damage" they wrought on newspapers and with disinformation. And now they don't. The Metaverse not taking off, and well Zuck no longer caring, changed all that.

Chasing income is considered living?

A rhetorical question begets a rhetorical answer. You can call me “Useless Eater”.
One of the most talented designers I know just took a job at the post office. It’s absolutely soul crushing to be a creative right now.
